Our 689th Dad in the Limelight is Sr. Strategist at MRM//McMann and A Curated Style well dressed guru, John Phillips. I want to thank John Phillips for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing John Phillips with all of you.
1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)
My name is John Phillips, and I earn a living as a Sr. Strategist at MRM//McMann. I consider myself a creative individual that enjoys problem solving. When I’m not working, I enjoy using my talents to build personal projects on the side to keep me active and engaged. While I don’t consider myself in the limelight, one of my favorite personal projects is A Curated Style, a site/newsletter aimed at helping men dress better. Clothing is something that I’m passionate about, and I enjoy helping others dress well and boost their confidence.
When I’m not doing the above, I enjoy being a jungle gym that my kids climb on, spending time with family, and golfing.
2) Tell me about your family
I’m a husband to my college sweetheart, and father to 2 beautiful girls, aged 3 and 20 months. My family is everything to me, and helps me keep balance in my life where it’s all too easy to be working all the time.
3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?
Patience, by far. Kids are going to be kids, and sometimes I forget that and expect more. So it’s a challenge for me to step back and realize that sometimes. My wife helps keep me in check many times, but patience is easily the biggest hurdle for me day-to-day.
4) What advice would you give to other fathers?
Take it one day at a time. You’re going to have some very rough days/nights, and you will certainly be tested. Start every morning as a brand new opportunity to have a good and positive day. Move forward, and don’t look back.
5) How have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?
After college I worked a ton, both during the day job, and afterwords on freelance projects. I enjoyed it, and it kept me motivated. There was a small moment in time, when I was feeling extremely exhausted and worn out, where I got a realization that I need to take a step back. That step back was learning how to cut off work, and enjoy myself. This was before I was married, and before kids. So by the time I did get married and became a father, I had taught myself that balance already. It wasn’t a hard adjustment, but coming to that realization was much harder because it can be a challenge to step back and assess.
6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?
That my challenges and struggles aren’t unique. We all go through this together. We may not be as vocal about it, but having a support system of other dads that know what the struggle is like is satisfying.
7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?
Kids have the most amazing imaginations. And the best way disconnect from work and the world, is to get lost in their imaginations with them. However that happens, give your kids the best opportunities to let their imaginations run wild.
8) What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?
We took our kids on a cruise earlier this year, and had a blast experiencing a big vacation with them. It was our first big vacation with the kids, so we enjoyed watching them navigate and play on this huge ship.
