Dads in the Limelight Series

Our 662nd Dad in the Limelight is Carl Johnson of Saint Creative. I want to thank Carl Johnson for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing Carl Johnson with all of you.

1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)
My name is Carl Johnson of Saint Creative and I’m passionate about art, faith, music and culture. I’m a creative and retro kat, into most things vintage (sometimes I think I was born in the wrong decade). I want to live an inspired life and hopefully inspire others along the way. In regards to the limelight, surprisingly, I want to be humble. I’m trying to mix being passionate and humility together.

2) Tell me about your family.
Man, I love my family. I’ve always appreciated the quote/proverb that says “Behind every great man is an even greater woman.” Therefore, I give serious props to my wife, Colleen. She’s beautiful on the inside and out, with character to match. She’s an amazing mom, wife and person, and I consider it a joy to be on the journey with her. She’s so passionate about our family that it inspires me. Together, we have 2 kids – Waylen (8) and Shiloh (6).

3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?
Being a dad is hard work, as are relationships in general! We all have dreams and desires, and it’s a shocking moment when we realize it’s not all about me. I believe most men want to be great–in life and what they do. Some people talk and care about leaving a lasting legacy. Money, career, status, possessions, and accomplishments will all fade away after we’re gone (because they’re temporary). What if our family, our children, are our true legacy?

4) What advice would you give to other fathers?
I’m no expert or professional, but I am trying my best. Being a dad is an awesome responsibility and privilege. Don’t be too hard on yourself when you screw up. Don’t compare yourself to others or worry too much about the Joneses. Admit when you’re wrong to your kids (or wife) and ask them to forgive you. It shows them that you’re human. Try to live a simple life, if you’re into the kind of thing. Be grateful for the gifts you’ve been given – both great and small. If you have a personal faith, pray for your kids.

5) How have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?
Don’t think I’ve arrived yet. Our world certainly doesn’t encourage or make it easy for us to achieve balance, does it?  You gotta work at it, everyday. Prioritize what matters.

6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?
I’m continually encouraged and inspired by my friends who are doing a great job raising their families. It makes me want to be better. My friend Shawn is always praising his wife every chance he gets, a practice I’ve picked up from him.

7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?
Being present is a big one–they can tell when you aren’t paying attention. Try not to live on your phone in front of them. Lighten up. Learn to be more patient…

8) What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?
Probably obvious, but the actual birth of my kids was flat out awesome! Building traditions (annual, seasonal, vacations, etc). I’m always looking for “teachable moments” with my son. I’m talking about basic, everyday, practical stuff. If I’m doing something around the house, I should invite him into the experience and show him how to do it. Hopefully this will give him a few tools and build up confidence, plus it’s good bonding time.
