Our 661st Dad in the Limelight is recording studio owner and entrepreneur Jeff “fuzzy” Wenzel. I want to thank Jeff “fuzzy” Wenzel for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing Jeff “fuzzy” Wenzel with all of you.
1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)
Jeff “fuzzy” Wenzel 37 from Metro Detroit. I’m a husband and a father of two kids Atticus 5 and Neve 3. I spent the first part of my working life bussing tables at a restaurant to pay my way into owning recording studios. In 2011 I opened up Groovebox Studios and then created a partnership with Kickstarter to help bands fund their recording projects. After a five year run and 300 hundred bands later I moved my focus into crowdfunding consulting. Now I have a small startup company called Woodshed Agency, and our focus is to help make people’s dreams come alive through raising the necessary capital they need to fund their project. Currently, I’m working on the fundraising aspect of the new CREEM Magazine documentary which will be launching in July of 2016.
2) Tell me about your Family
I grew up in Ida, Michigan. Ida is a small farming village with “literally” one blinking four-way stop. My parents Gordon and Cookie are still together and my sister Jen is a Fire Chief in Dearborn, MI. My wife is Erin, and we met online and for me, it was love at first sight. After dating for five years, we had our son Atticus and then eventually my daughter Neve came into the picture.
3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?
My biggest problem so far is finding a good balance between work and personal time. My job consists of having clients all over the world and of all different stature. Having these types of clients drives me to feel like I have to be “on” 24/7. Unplugging and giving 100% attention to my family always feels unnatural and something I’m consistently trying to adjust and tweak for a good overall balance.
4) What advice would you give to other fathers?
Find patience. Wherever and whenever you can.
5) How have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?
I haven’t come close to finding a balance. I’ve set up tons of automation sequences to handle mundane email banter, and I’ve tried to limit my “on” time as much as possible. But like I said before it still feels like it’s not enough.
6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?
I have found great comfort in knowing that I’m not alone in my battles. Just hearing and talking about what’s going on in other households allows me to feel better about my situations. It almost gives me a sense of the “locker room” vibe when 4-5 Dads with small kids are in the room together comparing war stories.
7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?
Recently I’ve been amazed at the direct lines that extend from my dad thru me and now into my son. I’ve caught myself many times having almost a “deja vu moment” when all three of us are in the room together. It’s weird to see the traits, habits, and overall nuances between all of us sneaking out daily.
8) What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?
Last year I got to take my kids for the first time up to my extended families cottage in Upper Michigan. The cottage is where I spent most of my summer vacations, and it’s filled with millions of great memories. To be able to share my experiences with my kids was an incredible moment. It’s also a moment I can’t wait to share again this year when we go on vacation again to the cabin.
