Dads in the Limelight – Ultimate Ending Author, Danny McAleese

Our 658th Dad in the Limelight is Choose Your Own Adventure Author, Danny McAleese. I want to thank Danny McAleese for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing Danny McAleese with all of you.

Danny McAleese is the 658th Dad being spotlighted in the Dads in the Limelight series on the Dad of Divas blog!

1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)

I’m a self-employed father of 4, with ages ranging from 16 all the way down to a two-year old.  My wife and I run several retail websites, and since I do most of the back-end computer stuff it allows me to work from home and write.  I have a few novels being looked at with publishers right now, but most recently released a children’s “Choose your Own Adventure” style book series called Ultimate Ending.  We launched last month with six books at  and the entire series can be found here on Amazon.

2) Tell me about your family
I’m both a stepfather and a father, but to me the roles are the same.  My wife Aurelia and I have been together 13 years now, and in business together for 10.  We love living in Long Island, NY with our very big extended Italian family, three dogs, and spend a whole lot of each day just running around trying to get things done.

3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?

Dads have much the same challenges moms do, only from a different perspective.  For my sons I try to be the best possible role model, having gone through much of what they’re going through themselves.  For my daughter it’s a little different.  It’s hard not to be overprotective.  The hardest part, I think, is dividing time.  Making sure you give each child equal parts love, affection, and discipline.  This gets tougher as they get more involved with school, friends, sports, and all other aspects of life as they grow up.
4) What advice would you give to other fathers?
MAKE THE TIME.  Always.  Your kids are going to grow up so fast it’ll make your head spin, and you really don’t want to miss it.  No one tells you when you’ve taken them to the park for the last time.  No one warns you about how sad you’ll feel when they stop holding your hand to cross the street.  You have to savor those things now, while you still have them.  Enjoy them, and let them be imprinted on your mind as great future memories.

5) How have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?
It’s always tough to balance work and home life, but when you work from home it can be even tougher.  Making plans can help with that.  Schedule a date or time to do stuff with your family, and then do your best to honor those commitments.  As I said above, childhood goes fast.  You only have so much time.  Right now my oldest son is about to take his road test!  It seems like just the other day we were putting him on the bus for kindergarten.
6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?
I’ve learned that there are no ‘roles’ when raising kids.  Do anything and everything your kids want to do with you.  Work as a team with your wife or partner, but never turn down the opportunity to have fun as just a dad.  Because just as mothers have that special maternal bond with their children?  Dads have it too.

7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?

Being a father is the single most rewarding job you’ll ever have.  You’ll never understand the phrase ‘unconditional love’ until you have a child.  The time you put in with your children will be the time you get back from them later on in life, so dad it up now, while you can!

8) What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?

Most of my best memories are of things that happened spontaneously; just getting in the car and going out for stuff like go-carting, or ice cream, or whatever.  And you never know what will forge great memories.  Watching my toddler’s eyes go wide as we took him to look at Christmas lights last winter will stick with me forever.  You can’t plan a memory like that, it just has to happen.
