Dads in the Limelight – Marketing and Public Relations Guru, Don Martelli
Our 657th Dad in the Limelight is Marketing and Public Relations Guru, Don Martelli. I want to thank Don Martelli for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing Don Martelli with all of you.
1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge
My name is Don Martelli and I’m a native Bostonian, bad accent and all. I’m a former reporter for the Boston Globe, covered business and politics for four years. I covered a number of big stories in the city and later in my career, as I changed professions (now in PR), I was on the other end of those stories. I worked a crisis assignment with the Archdiocese of Boston during the abuse scandal. In fact, a lot of the reporters that are featured in the movie Spotlight are my former colleagues. That caused a few interesting moments, especially fielding calls from “Robby”, who’s played by Michael Keaton and was my former city editor.
Currently, I’m a VP with Schneider Associates, an integrated marketing and public relations agency in Boston. I work with the president and CEO to drive agency growth as well as work with our management team in driving strategy across all accounts.
In my “free time” I coach softball, collect pocket knives, love technology (cross platform geek), love all things Boston sports, love exploring new foods, enjoy craft beers and cigars.
2) Tell me about your family
I’ve been married for nearly 14 years, have two girls (12 and 9) and a 93 pound white German Shepherd called Daisy. We live in a city just north of Boston. We are constantly together and I wouldn’t have it any other way. We are each other’s best friends. Now that the kids are getting older, we get to do some cool things and not have to worry about things like diaper bags and tantrums! I do, however, have to worry about puberty and having tweens in the house. And oh, I only have one bathroom in the house so I’m in trouble.

3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?
The only challenge I’ve had being a father is time. You can NEVER have enough time with your kids when they are young. This is a time when they want to hang out with you and enjoy being around their parents. As they get older and go on to live their lives as young adults, my time with them will be sporadic at best. It’s sad to think that way, but it’s going to happen at some point. So, right now, as they still want to hold my hand as we walk, I’ll soak up as much time as possible.
4) What advice would you give to other fathers?
I wish I could give advice that sounded like I was some ancient sage, but it would just be a bunch of crap. The only advice any father can give to another father is to enjoy it — all of it. Enjoy the ups and downs. Enjoy the emotional rollercoaster. Enjoy the frustrating moments. Enjoy the proud moments. Just soak up as much time with them as you can. It’s that simple.
5) How have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?
There’s no app, no coaching, no magic wand that helps you with balance. You just have to dedicate yourself to finding balance and making it work. There are times when you can’t make a ballgame or a play. Then there are times that you can take a day off of work in the summer and spend the entire day with them doing whatever they want to do. Finding balance is important, but it’s really less about finding it and MAKING it.
6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?
I’ve learned more about DIY and activities in my interactions with other dads as opposed to HOW to be a dad. Then again, the things I’ve learned help me be a better dad, so maybe that’s the answer — being a better dad.

7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?
There’s no playbook for it. Just get into the game and play.
8) What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?
There are WAY too many to share. However, it’s those instances where I see one of my daughters try something new or fail, get up and try again that make me proud.
If you have any questions for Don Martelli, please leave a comment here and I will make sure that he gets them so that he may be able to respond!
