Dads in the Limelight Series

Our 842nd Dad in the Limelight is Josh Kline. I want to thank Josh Kline for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing Josh Kline with all of you.

Our 842nd Dad in the Limelight is Dad, Coach and Comedian, Josh Kline. Come and learn from this engaged, passionate father about being a better dad!

1)      Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)

My name is Josh Kline and I identify most with being a dad and a coach. As a fellow dad and coach, my mission is to support as many dads as possible in having an amazing, joyous, overabundant life. I also just want people to laugh. I used to do standup and improv comedy when I lived in NYC, and now have a dad comedy account on Instagram as my outlet for tickling people’s funny bones (especially parents). (@welcome2fatherdumb)

2)      Tell me about your family

I have 2 daughters. Charlie is 4 and Noa is two. I have been married to my wife Jessica for 5.5 years and been with her 9.5 years. It’s just me and the ladies!

3)      What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?

Balance probably. Juggling everything and being there for everyone can be hard. I think I do it pretty well. Actually I don’t necessarily do it well, but I do it all with a smile J…

4)      What advice would you give to other fathers?

Making things easier is impossible. Having a partner on this journey throughout the easy and especially hardship is foundational, so don’t separate yourself from your partner on any level (physically, mentally, emotionally…). Connecting with him/her gives you a level of resiliency when times get tough. Don’t do it alone. If you are great at asking for support, make sure you give more support. If you are great at giving support, make sure you ask for more support. Connection and Support are huge.

5)      How have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?

I think there is an opportunity to integrate it. I am dad everywhere. I bring “dad” to my work and my clients. My heart shows up everywhere.

6)      What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?

I have learned that we are just as loving and nurturing as mom. We can handle a carful of kids alone. We don’t have to be Robin or Pippen in the parenting roles, but can be Batman or Jordan. We are baddass.

7)      What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?

Put down your phone. Really connect with your kids. I know it is such a cliché and buzzword know but BE PRESENT. Turn off the tv and go outside with them. Dance with them. Share with them the things you think are cool. They will love some things as well as shut your lame sh#t down… Kiss them and snuggle and read to them. Things that are difficult now wont seem like a big deal down the road when you look back. Enjoy these times now because whatever the next phase is, you will wish for the previous phase…

8) What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?

When they say things that you have no idea how they learned it. Then you realize that only you could have taught them that and you just didn’t realize what you were doing. I had to put ointment on my 2-year old’s rash. I said “I need to put this cream on you before I put your diaper back on.” She said “cream get the money!”. I was shocked and stunned. How does she know Wu Tang?…
