Our 830th Dad in the Limelight is Steve Shugg. I want to thank Steve Shugg for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing Steve Shugg with all of you.
1) Tell me about yourself (as well as how you’re in the limelight)
My name is Steve Shugg, and I’m very quickly approaching my 10-year anniversary of being a parent.
I’m a father to my son Dylan, used to be a radio DJ in Phoenix, then for some odd reason decided I wanted to run marathons, so I quit to focus on running. Now I live in LA as a storyteller for a company.
2) Tell me about your family
I’m a newly single father, so it’s just Dylan and myself out here in California. We had a fish once, but surprisingly gold fish don’t always live to ripe old ages.
3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father
My son was born when I was still young (only 23), so at first the biggest challenge was trying to grow up myself while also being in charge of another human. I was learning to change diapers while my friends were trying to get me to come out partying. You learn to make a lot of sacrifices when you become a dad.
Lately the hardest thing has been raising him on my own. His mother moved away, so I’ve been donning both parental hats. I don’t look as good in heels, but my cooking has drastically improved.
4) What advice would you give to other fathers?
There is no such thing as a perfect parent. Just because you see a picture of a happy family online does not mean that 5 seconds after that camera went off the child didn’t start screaming because you didn’t bring that stick back from the park. Enjoy the ups and downs that will inevitably happen, and learn as much as you can from each one.
5) How have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?
My life pretty much revolves around being a dad, so anything I do I first look at how it will impact my son. My way of “recharging” is to head outside and go adventuring in the mountains or exploring someplace new, and luckily he enjoys that too.
6) What have you learned from the fathers you have interacted with?
That I’m not the only one who questions how they’re doing as a dad. There are other guys out there worried they’re doing something wrong, or wondering how they can be better. You just have to remember that you learn something each day, and apply that new knowledge as best you can going forward.
7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?
It is hands down the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. Every day I look at my son and see how he’s growing, and I could not be more proud of him.
8) What have been the most memorably experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?
Last year for spring break we went to Sequoia National Park. It was the first time for both of us, and to experience something so completely breathtaking with my son was a memory I’ll cherish forever. Plus, we stopped at this really good pizza joint on the way back… something else I’ll probably remember for a long time.
