Our 808th Dad in the Limelight is Thirsty Daddy Jeremy Barnes. I want to thank Jeremy Barnes for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing Jeremy Barnes with all of you.
1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)
I met my wife at work, training her to do the same job as myself. She came with a five year old daughter, now seventeen, that eventually was joined by a little sister, now six. They have not only changed everything about me, but my entire outlook on the world. Everything that I do, I do for them.
Be there. Be there for as much as you can, whenever you can. Its impossible to convey how fast it all goes by, but also how many little moments, seemingly insignificant, will be so important, both to you and to them. You don’t realize how many successes and failures make up every single day. Your child will only do everything for the first time once. Rediscovering the entire world through their perspective has got to be one of the most special gifts that we will ever receive. Enjoy every second of the journey that you can.
This sounds contradictory to everything that I just said, but make the effort. Get a babysitter and take your wife out to dinner. Go golfing with the guys. Fatherhood is magical, but its also exhausting. It’s a daily adventure but also a daily grind. If you don’t find a way to keep a part of yourself, keep something for you, it will wear you down. As I’ve said, it’s a balance that can be tricky to find. Have I mentioned that parenthood is hard?
That they understand. That even though we all take our own individual journey, we’re all on the same road, facing the same obstacles but also celebrating the same triumphs. I feel very fortunate to not only have some “real world” dad friends to talk to but have found an amazing community of dads online. Being there for each other, to listen when someone needs to vent, to join each other in celebrating accomplishments and to commiserate over failure has been a part of fatherhood that I wouldn’t have expected before hand, that I wouldn’t have realized is so important.
How completely impossible it is to prepare for. How completely life changing. How awesome.
That’s the most amazing thing about this gig, the thing that they don’t tell you in books, that you can’t explain to anybody that hasn’t been there : every day is a new one. Pick just about any date on the calendar over the past decade and on that day I was frustrated, proud, amused, angry, full of love and of gratitude. It’s the roller coaster that you can never get off of. Its fun, its scary, and I love every minute of it.
