Our 754th Dad in the Limelight is Alex Roper. I want to thank Alex Roper for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing Alex Roper with all of you.
1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)
I am a stay at home parent. I worked in retail management for over 15 years and started staying at home to go to school and due to health reasons. I am originally from Oklahoma and studied Music Education at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. I am now pursuing a Web Technology & Design degree with a minor in Psychology. I now live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and have fallen in love with the beach. Any relocation is entirely based upon the distance to the water.
I have a wonderful wife that works for a small ISP and is working on her cybersecurity degree. I have a 10 year old girl, 9 year old boy, and 2 year old boy. All of us have salt in our blood and cannot fathom a life without the ocean.
3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?
Guilt for my parenting mistakes and learning to parent kids with different personalities.
4) What advice would you give to other fathers?
Roll with the flow. Take care of yourself both physically and mentally. You can’t parent well if you aren’t taking care of yourself. Practice mindfulness. Usually if your kids are acting out there is a root cause that needs uncovered.
5) How have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?
I am an introvert and homebody so it’s not real hard for me. I have a couple of close friends that I go out for coffee or drinks with about once a week. We talk about music and life.
6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?
We put a tremendous burden on ourselves, and most of the time it is an unreasonable burden. Kids are resilient and they just want us present and engaged.
7)What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?
Oh wow, there are so many. My daughter’s smile before she learned to fake smile. The way my middle son used to say daddy, it was more like daaee. My youngest spent the first 3 weeks of his life in the NICU, so the first time I was able to hold him without tubes attached.
