Our 732nd Dad in the Limelight is ESPN Producer and father, Jason Romano. I want to thank Jason Romano for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing Jason Romano with all of you.
1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)
My name is Jason Romano and I’m Dawn’s husband since 1999, Sarah’s Dad since 2004, and have been a content producer on Radio, TV and Digital Media since 1997. I began my career as a producer at ESPN in 2000 and have been there since working on many of the shows and brands you have come to know as a sports fan tuning in each day. Away from the job, I’m also a church leader, speaker and blogger.
2) Tell me about your family
I’m the son of Linda and Joe Romano. I have 2 younger brothers Chris and Damian. They’re my best friends and I’m proud of the Fathers and Husbands they have become. I married Dawn in 1999 and 4+ years later, we became parents to our precious Sarah, born in 2004. We’re blessed and honored to be her Dad and are thankful each day for the blessing that she is.
3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?
The biggest challenge is always balance. Balancing work, with home and being available to your children as much as possible. I think as parents, we sometimes take for granted how important it is to take an ACTIVE role in our kids lives on a daily basis. That’s the biggest challenge to me.
4) What advice would you give to other fathers?
Be present. Be intentional in how you show love to your kids. Be available to them as often as possible. If you have a job that requires travel, be intentional on communicating with them when you’re away. If you’re going through a tough moment, be intentional in how you love them and show grace to them.
5) How have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?
It’s not easy. I find myself going back to the idea of putting first things first. In our house, our faith in Christ is first. Then it’s family and then it’s work. Often, I’ve screwed this up and put work first, or even family first, ahead of God. Once we put our priorities in their proper place, everything else aligns properly.
6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?
I’ve learned about discipline. I’ve learned about admitting when we’re wrong. I’ve learned about failing and getting back up. I’ve learned how to talk to my kids and not talk at them.
7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?
Just enjoy the experience. My daughter is 12 now and the past decade has flown by. Appreciate every moment. EVERY moment. Even the bad times because soon, they’ll be gone and you’ll wish you had those opportunities again.
8) What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?
Easily taking my daughter to things that I was unable to do when I was younger. Particularly Disney World. I didn’t go to Disney until I was in my 20’s. My daughter went when she was 3 and we’ve been blessed to take her back numerous times since. Watching her smile and enjoy those type of blessings have been such a great sense of pride to me as a Dad.
