Our 728th Dad in the Limelight is How to Daddoo founder Danny Gray. I want to thank Danny Gray for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing Danny Gray with all of you.
1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)
My name is Danny Gray, I’m a proud dad to my daughter and husband to my wife. I’m in the limelight because of my dad blog, How to Daddoo, which is my what-not-to-do guide to dadding through my eyes.
2) Tell me about your family
My wife and I have been married for almost three years. We have a gorgeous, little girl called Ayla who will be two in January. We are very close to our families and Ayla is lucky enough to have lots of cousins.
3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?
When we found out we were expecting, we had a few concerns about some hereditary conditions. I was born with a rare genetic disorder known as Simpson-Golabi-Behmel syndrome. Due to this we had geneticist appointments, heart scans, growth scans and a few unexpected visits to hospital. Thankfully, Ayla was born with a full bill of health, but I did find it difficult to deal with the possibility that she may face some of the same hurdles I did as a child. I do wish she was born with six fingers like me though. She’s already showing musical flair on the keyboard, that sixth finger would’ve come in handy.
4) What advice would you give to other fathers?
I’m full of useless advice over on my blog How To Daddoo but I would say time is precious. Make the most of every second with your little one. Also, if like me you have zero fashion sense, when dressing your child try and stick to one color scheme. Ayla regularly ends up looking like a rainbow has thrown up on her!
5) How have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?
I don’t go out anymore! I joke, it’s important to have time with friends now and again but I do have to admit, with working a full-time job during the week the hour before Ayla’s bedtime and our weekends are dedicated to her. When we do get the chance, it’s great to go out with my other half and friends to spend some grown-up alone time. However, the conversation does always come back around to Peppa Pig or singing Pancake Manor songs.
6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?
I love chatting to other dads and hearing their stories and advice. The most valuable thing I’ve learnt which I’m sure most dads will agree is the importance of spending quality time with your little one. I learned so many things from my own Dad that I build into my role as a father.
7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?
I simply love being a father. As someone who never actively looked forward to being a parent, I’ve truly loved every minute. Trust yourself! You may think you can barely look after yourself but I promise you once that baby is in your arms dad-mode kicks in.
8.What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?
With our daughter getting older, I’ve loved watching her personality and sense of humor develop. We play silly games and laugh lots. It’s incredible the things she picks up. I’ll never forget the first time she managed to put ‘Happy and you know it’ on the tablet and lashed out the full choreography to it.
