Dads in the Limelight Series

Our 694th Dad in the Limelight is Podcaster and Father, Eric Rosenberg. I want to thank Eric Rosenberg for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing Eric Rosenberg with all of you.

1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)

Most people know me today from my flagship blog and podcast, Personal Profitability, where I have been writing since 2008 on personal finance and entrepreneurship topics. I started writing online in 2006 as a hobby, and turned it into a part-time side hustle business when I founded Personal Profitability in October, 2008.
Running my own website led to opportunities as a freelance writer and website developer, which became a growing part of my income over the years. Last year I earned $40,000 online, which was when I really started thinking about taking this whole online business thing full-time.
I made the leap from a decade in corporate finance and accounting to full-time online self-employment in April. So far, so good!

2) Tell me about your family
I enjoyed the single life for a long while after college, and met my amazing wife on a bike ride about four years ago. We moved together to Portland, Oregon and were married in 2014. Our baby girl was born in Portland on Halloween last year, then we picked up and moved to California to be closer to family (my in-laws) when I left my job in April.
In addition to my beautiful wife and baby girl, we have a dog, a Terrier mutt who loves to roll around on our pillows when we are not home and has varying success wrestling with our daughter.

3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?
When my daughter was born, I realized quickly that I didn’t have the time to be a great dad, a great employee, and a great entrepreneur at the same time. There was no way I was going to go half ass on being a dad, so I had to decide between the day job and the online business. I picked the online business, but walking away from that big regular paycheck wasn’t easy.

4) What advice would you give to other fathers?
Never let anything get in the way of your relationship with your children, and do whatever it takes to make them a priority. It will enrich both your life and theirs. Whether it is a job, money, hobby, or something else, give your kids the priority. You only get one shot at being a dad, the rest is commentary.
5) How have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?
I can’t say that this wasn’t somewhat of a challenge. Once I left my day job, I realized how hard I have to work online to get back to where our income was before. I am fortunate to be in a position where my wife can stay home with our daughter while I’m working, and I can work at home whenever I want.
I have a great partner in parenting in my wife, and without her, I don’t know how I could do it.

6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?
I’m in a mastermind group with four other entrepreneur dads, and I love that our conversations often deviate from work topics to parenting topics. I have learned a lot about how other dads balance parenting with work (and fun).
The most important things I have learned from another dad, however, came from my own dad. I learned all about what being a dad means from him, and try to take the best of what I learned from him and my grandfathers and apply it to my own parenting style.

7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?
I’m only eight months into being a dad, so I have a lot to learn. It has been one of the most humbling experiences of my life, and the most fulfilling. Don’t go into any parenting experience expecting that you know everything and have all the answers. Be willing to learn from others and discover new things as you go along.
8) What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?
Almost every time I enter a room and my daughter sees me, she smiles and giggles and her face lights up. I wouldn’t trade that for anything.
