Our 641st Dad in the Limelight is dad, broadcaster, and writer Buzz Bishop. I want to thank Buzz Bishop for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing Buzz Bishop with all of you.
1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)
I’m a dad, broadcaster, and writer from Calgary, Alberta. I’ve got 2 boys. I’m a radio host on a classic hits radio station (think Queen and Elton John) and the writer part is everywhere. I have 4 blogs of my own (The Blog According to Buzz, DadCAMP, cyberbuzz, and Local Pony) covering everything from personal stories to parenting to tech to travel. I’ve been online since 1996 and every time I get a new idea for a niche, I get a domain instead of adding a tab to my blog.
I also run and raise money for the Canadian Diabetes Association. For the past decade, I’ve been involved with Team Diabetes. We raise money and awareness and then go off on an international marathon. I’ve run in Iceland, Easter Island, Bermuda, and Edinburgh. This summer my entire family will do an event in Gold Coast, Australia. I monetize my blogs as a way to raise money for the cause and am closing in on $100 000 in lifetime funds raised.
2) Tell me about your family
I have two boys, and one of them is my favorite. Well, at least that’s what I was infamous for declaring back in 2012. Today my boys are 6 and nearly 9, and through that adventure I realized the most perfect age for kids is age 5. They’re young enough to cling to you and believe in magic, and old enough to wipe their own behind. My wife and I are really proud to have two great kids.
3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?
Falling in like with my kids. It took me a while to like them, it did. I mean, I loved them immediately, but the like part? That took a while. I wasn’t fond of babies, and until my kids could ‘do stuff’ it was a challenge. Now, however, I’m a ‘not at home dad’ dragging them off on hikes and camping and adventures whenever I can.
4) What advice would you give to other fathers?
You’ll like them eventually.
5) How have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?
My wife and I take turns and I learn to give up on things. We don’t have family nearby or a reliable sitter, so we trade off when we have work or social commitments. Most times we manage, sometimes I have to skip poker or she has to miss breakfast club because we just can’t juggle it all.
6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?
CTFD. I’m not alone. It gets better.

7) What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?
Watching them grow. Each day is a new miracle with kids. They’re better and more complicated each and every day. I love seeing them do things I can’t. My 6 yr old is a better artist than me. My nearly 9 yr old is a better dancer than me. They both speak better french than me. I get the final bragging rights though, because I made them.
